JCD and King David High School visit Alyn Hospital
A JCD delegation and 100 pupils from King David High School in Manchester visited Israel last week to hand over a JCD cheque for £2,500 to the Alyn Orthopaedic Hospital in Jerusalem.
The money is part of the £10,000 annual cost of maintaining the animal-assisted therapy project at the hospital.
King David High is aiming to raise the rest of the money needed for the project.
The KD party included 12 teachers and 100 Year Nine pupils – boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 14. Joy Moss (chairman), Ginny Campus (vice chairman), Daniel Burger (executive director) and Jackie Persoff (personal assistant to Mr Burger) represented JCD.
Brenda Hirsch, Alyn’s director of public relations, said: “We were delighted to welcome JCD and the wonderful children of King David High who are setting a marvellous example to other children with their tremendous commitment to funding the animal-assisted therapy unit for another year.
“It wasn’t feasible for all the KD children to be shown around the hospital, but our children spent many weeks organising a mini food and handicraft fair with all the items made and sold by children who attend our Day Care, Medical, Educational and Rehabilitation Centre.
“I am positive that the King David pupils will remember their visit to Alyn as one of the highlights of their stay in Israel and our children will certainly remember them!
“All of us here at Alyn most certainly enjoyed having these wonderfully caring and concerned youngsters who so admirably want to help improve the quality of life of children and teenagers less fortunate than themselves.”
Burger said: “It was very exciting for JCD to be able to give the children the opportunity to see a JCD project at first hand.
“This year our link with King David High is a pilot scheme but we hope to be able to roll it out to more Jewish high schools in other parts of the country.”
While in Israel, Burger also visited a number of other JCD-backed projects as well as talking with a number of charities seeking JCD support, including visits to Tel Aviv, Netanya, Haifa, Bet Shemesh, Sderot and Lod.
He also called in on JCD founder member Arieh Handler, who recently celebrated his 92nd birthday.
