JCD forges Turkey link
JCD has forged a link with the Turkish Jewish community following a three-day visit to Istanbul and Izmir in February by the charity’s executive director Daniel Burger.
Burger, who met with community leaders, educationists and youth project directors and visited schools and synagogues in the two cities, said: “We have never previously received an application for funding from Turkey, but it’s an exciting new area for us and we look forward to receiving some applications very shortly.
“There are some 25,000 Jews in Istanbul and about 2,500 in Izmir and there are a number of Jewish welfare organisations operating because the state welfare system is so poor. I saw a number of projects that I feel we can work with.
“We also discussed the possibility of working with them to set up a bar and batmitzvah twinning programme and other ways of linking children of the UK community with those in the Turkish community.”
